This is music to so many of our ears, right? When we think about it, why wouldn’t it be? A holiday devoted to eating around a table with our favorite people (or maybe not) with an excuse to eat more food than possibly imaginable without any hesitation – count us in. When a lot of us think about Thanksgiving, while full of sweet memories, it can be quite the overwhelming task to conquer the grocery store and master each delicious dish placed on the table. By the end of the day, while tiresome at times, it’s a special day to share with the people we love – our family and friends gathered for delicious food and our beloved adult beverages.
Thanksgiving is rated as America’s 2nd favorite holiday (right behind Christmas, of course.) But, maybe not for all of us. While you were planning your Thanksgiving menu weeks (days for some of us) before the big day, truck drivers from each and every state were hauling your chow across the nation, even numerous months prior to this day of thanks. While we’ll spare you of the dirty details of how the tom becomes your turkey, you might be interested to know that more than 237.5 million turkeys are raised in the United States each year, with nearly 21% of those turkeys being consumed on Thanksgiving Day. That is nearly 50 million turkeys. 50 million in one day. That translates into approximately 16.6 thousand full truckloads of turkeys made just for you to have your holiday feast. Those 16.6 thousand truckloads represent thousands of trips across the nation, weeks of carriers away from their families and home, and all to make this holiday possible for you. Let me introduce to you the Santa Claus of Thanksgiving…. Our truckers!
As you sit down this thanksgiving, take the time to give thanks for many things. Starting with those around your table, don’t forget to consider all those that made this holiday meal possible, many of whom won’t be spending it with their families or in their homes. In fact, this year, give some thought as to how you may even be able to make it special for someone who is making this day special for you. It will make it all the more special.
