On December 17 of every year since 1992, wreaths have adorned the graves of our fallen veterans at Arlington National Cemetery. Beginning in 1992, a business owner with hundreds of extra wreaths recalled his unforgettable experience at Arlington as a young boy, inspiring his vision to celebrate the lives of veterans through garnishing their graves. It has boomed across America, and now the world, for the past 35 years.
Wreaths Across America is an organization that remembers and honors the lives of veterans while working to teach the younger generations of our nation the value and the cost of freedom. It strives to be much more than decorating graves – it is about remembering their names and honoring their lives. Now delivering to an additional 1,100 locations in all 50 states, as well other places within the world, Wreaths Across America is diligently working to ensure that the number of decorated graves are growing each year. Trucking companies from all across the nation volunteered their services to make this day possible. With each truck carrying approximately 5,000 wreaths, it takes over 300 trucks to deliver the number of wreaths to various participating cemeteries, with 60 of those trucks delivering to Arlington alone.
The trucking industry has done an admirable job of honoring America’s heroes, as nearly 70 trucking companies volunteered their trucks for wreath deliveries. Yet, this isn’t the only way that the trucking industry honors America’s heroes. Transport America was recently granted permission to offer an apprenticeship program to military veterans to help them transition into the transportation industry following their active service. This program intends to train the participants on how to be a driver instructor, ultimately leading to become a student driver instructor. They will receive pay raises based on their skill, encouraging veterans to build a life-long career within this field.
With these courageous fighters giving of themselves, it is the least that we can do as a community, and an industry, to serve them by honoring their duty, their lives and their sacrifice for us as individuals, as well as an entire nation. At Vestra Logistics, we would like to voice our support for veteran gratitude and extraordinary recognition. We continue to encourage our industry to give as we can and always go (or drive) the extra mile for those that have fought so that we may have the freedom to do just that. –
