Trafficking. Specifically human trafficking.
When most people hear these words, the first thing that comes to mind is foreign. Oh this is illegal in the United States or this doesn’t happen here. Usually the last thought that comes to mind is that human sex trafficking is happening here, on U.S. soil, possibly in our very own towns. Sadly this is the truth. Human trafficking has been reported in ALL fifty states.
Truckers Against Trafficking is an organization whose mission is to “educate, equip, empower and mobilize members of the trucking and travel plaza industry to combat domestic sex trafficking.” According to the TAT website, the number of victims to trafficking in the United States is estimated at an astonishing hundreds of thousands. Unbelievable.
So what is being done to combat this? Truckers Against Trafficking is vigorously raising awareness. One of their goals is to make training videos and awareness materials a required part of the trucking industries orientation. They also provide a number to truckers that they can call to report incidents of human trafficking.
Since Truckers Against Trafficking started, there have been drastic gains in human trafficking. Calls into the National Human Trafficking Resource Center have increased drastically. Women and children are being rescued on a continuous basis.
A huge thank you goes out to every truck driver out there who is helping fight against human trafficking!
